Reproduceable on master. Video where i use only the "mouse wheel" to zoom: https://dump.bitcheese.net/files/elaturu/marble-zoom.ogv

Zooming with the mousewheel always zooms towards the mouse cursor position (I guess that is what you meant). This is intentional behavior.

I meant that the position it zooms at changes after i zoom in-out a few times, even though i don't move the cursor.

You are correct, zooming in and zooming out this way is indeed not exactly the inverse operation. I'm not even sure whether it would be feasible to accomplish this. Interesting! :-)
