Every time I try to open a file or create a new it crashes.

Reproducible: Always

This is probably the same as 348941. Krita2.9.0 possibly fixed the crash.

Could you please update the latest version as Guruguru said and tell us whether the problem is gone? 

You can also try to rename your config folder:

press windows-r
type %AppData%
in the explorer file manager window, go to Roaming
rename the krita folder to krita.bak

Or start krita in clean-config mode by starting it keeping ctrl-alt-shift pressed during startup.
