Description Sebastian 2015-04-23 15:49:28 UTC
After upgrade to vivid sddm shows everythin in black so nothing is recognizable. Except for the fonts, they are in a dark grey.

If I do manage to log in I get a completely black desktop. Background is black, KMenu is black, systray is black, everything.

I think the screenshot is the best example of what is wrong.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04
Package: sddm 0.11.0-0ubuntu9
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.19.0-8.8-generic 3.19.1
Uname: Linux 3.19.0-8-generic x86_64
ApportVersion: 2.17-0ubuntu1
Architecture: amd64
CurrentDesktop: KDE
Date: Fri Apr 10 14:51:55 2015
InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-08-25 (958 days ago)
InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 12.04.1 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120820.1)
SourcePackage: sddm
UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. service sddm start

Actual Results:
sddm is black

Expected Results:
sddm should not be black

I filed this bug with Ubuntu's launchpad service but haven't had any help yet.

Looks nasty, I'm afraid I have little idea what could be wrong here. It may be a problem with X drivers. Maybe try turning off kwin compositing (desktop effects)?

Screenshot of KControl and KMenu

This is so strange. If I do login some applications like KControlCenter work fine, while others like KMenu don't.

Are there some caches or something that I could try deleting?

Exactly same here after upgrading to Kubuntu Wily. Tried purging Kde and Kubuntu packages also created a new account just to test if it's some configuration problem but nope. Compositing is clearly on but the shell is all black and text is grey and application themselves have rendering errors like black boxes where buttons should be. Unity works fine and so do Steam games like Team Fortress 2 so it's not a acceleration problem.

Laptop is Lenovo 505g wit A10-5750m chip so the gfx card is Radeon HD8650g.

Can you try putting

QT_XCB_FORCE_SOFTWARE_OPENGL=1

into /etc/environment
