Sentry Crash Report:

Description RussianNeuroMancer 2015-04-12 14:17:45 UTC
Today after regular reboot I get black desktop, white panel and cursor. plasmashell process is running, so at least I can say it's doesn't crash on start. Restarting of plasmashell process doesn't help. Removing few plasma-related files in .cache workaround issue for now, but what I need to do next time, to provide more information about this issue to developers?

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

There is plenty of free space (around 250 GB) so doesn't looks like duplicate of this one: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341963

Alt+F2 hotkey works when issue happen, but krunner doesn't display search results when I enter applications names, so running application thought krunner was impossible.

Also have this problem.

To fix it I have to delete the plasma_theme_default_v0.9.7.kcache file from the .cache folder.

Also, may have something to do with kernel 3.19. If the above file is present and I choose kernel 3.19 I get the black screen (after login) with no desktop. If I delete the above file and choose 3.19 it will work. Well, sometimes.

In my case when this happened second time looks like it was because .cache/ksycoca5 get owned by root after launching Partition Manager using sudo in previous session (I still doesn't sure about cause of first time).

Hi all.

This one happened to me twice now. The first on Kubuntu15.04 beta 2, weeks ago. That time didn’t know what to do and ended up formatting the whole thing. As I only had one partition, also created the normal set (home+swap) so it could be easier to repair.

Now I have the new Kubuntu 15.04 (installed from scratch) with all updates and migrated to Plasma 5.3. Just a few hours ago and out of the blue, doing nothing special, Systems Settings showed some message about ".... not... image.." (sorry, couldn’t capture it :-[ ) After restarting all I got was the empty desktop with blank panel and a useless moving mouse pointer.

Nothing works. Alt+F2 shows up but does nothing either, you can move the mouse but right click does nothing. My only scape was changing session (Alt-F1), login in and doing the commands:

mv ~/.cache ~/.cache.old
sudo restart -r now

There is, so far, no way to reproduce this problem. I know is just a question of time until randomly I lost my desktop again. This one is a very serious show stopper; in my humble opinion you are better off avoiding migration into Kubuntu 15.04 until it gets fixed.

do you still have that cache.old folder?

Can you run ls -l .cache.old and attach the output please.

Here, at least one problem is that your ksycoca5 is owned by root.
This suggests you probably have run some app as root, which is not
recommended. We've fixed this and you might find some additional
info in the duplicated bug report.

Please reopen this if you happen to come across this again
with Plasma >=5.5.

Thanks
