When looking from distance (country and continent level), I find globe view much more useful. When looking for some details, globe view is blurred and mercator matches exactly with OSM tiles, so everything is nice and sharp.

I would like to have option to automatically switch between mercator and globe view at selected zoom level. When screen width is about 100 km, mercator distortion is barely noticable and this is about the right zoom level to switch away from globe view.

Yes that might be a nice feature indeed. I think we even did that in the Android version IIRC.
