installed Latex compiler with Yast. Got message that several kde-related packages would have to be updated

- Unusual behavior I noticed:
desktop background picture changed, from chameleon background to soft green background

The crash can be reproduced every time.

It looks like the dynamic library loader got confused by the updated KDE packages. If this issue is persistent after a restart of the Desktop, please add a comment.

Yes, it is persistent. Rebooting (or typing startx) reproduces the problem. If I log in with KDE I get a black screen. Interestingly I cannot choose Gnome either anymore, the system just hangs.

I still have not desktop environment available. Is there anyway I can delete and re-install all KDE related files?

Is the backtrace the same after a restart? If it is, another possibility is that you are mixing incompatible versions.

Yes, the problem remained the same. 

I ended up re-installing the OS and now things work again.

I guess there is nothing we can do, as this seems an issue with the library loader/cache.
