Description FabiB 2015-02-10 12:31:36 UTC
since i'm on Plasma 5 there is a strange problem in dolphin here. i tried to create a new user and even a fresh installment but nothing helps.

when i click on a filetype in dolphin, like a *.log - there comes up an popup with something like "kdeinit cant find /usr/bin/kate" (in German 'KDEInit kann „/usr/bin/kate“ nicht starten')

when i click on a *.png nothing happens...

now the interesting part is, that when i go to the terminal and write in "kdeinit4"
kdeinit4
kdeinit4: Shutting down running client.
[...]

and go back to dolphin - it works again and i can start everything

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. reboot and start dolphin
2. click on a file - like an *.txt file

Actual Results:
nothing or a "kdeinit cant find blahblah"-message

Expected Results:
it should start the app

run kdeinit4 in a terminal fixes this problem for me

Is the problem still present?
If yes, it's most likely an upstream bug I think, because this is the only bug which mentions such a problem. You are running Arch? Have you checked the Arch forums?

yes and it stranger then ever. now i cant even run dolphin because the "file process died".

i'm on Kubuntu vivid (devel) and can't find another one with that kind of problem but it happens every time on my 2 machines.

i'll will now move my home directory to /home/fabi.backup and recreate a new one. last time that helped for a few days. for a (bad)workaround i was doing a kdeinit4 with autostart on plasma

I think mine is the same and it is officially driving me insane. I cannot open two files at the same time with kate. Interestingly when I close the first file to open the second get this pop up:
KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/kate'
And I cannot do anything in dolphin. It locks up entirely until I click ok on that popup. (it also has a habit of hiding behind windows...)
Prior to the last update I could change X-DBUS-StartupType=Multi to Single
but that option seems to have vanished.
I am also on Vivid.
Now if I can figure out how to attach debug info to an existing bug..

This is resolved in the latest code. I have Plasma 5 installed from latest git and update it almost daily. I used to get the same issue sometime earlier, but now it works fine.

Ahh okies, guess that is inspiration to package the latest plasma5.
Thanks!

Fabi, what is the status of this bug?
Comment 8 Julian Steinmann 2018-03-31 16:21:15 UTC
Seems to work fine now (no new comments, nobody can reproduce), so I'll close this bug. If you still experience such an issue please reopen this report.
