I get  a segmentation fault in kded4 every time I startx,  I can continue using the desktop except there is no system tray.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. startx
2.
3.

Actual Results:  
segmentation fault with no system tray -- cannot start the system tray


I just installed slackware 14.1 which comes with kde 4.10.5
I got this same crash with kde 4.10.5 so I installed 4.13.3 of kde and am having the same problem.  I wonder if its to do with the underlying system rather than kde

Which NetworkManager version do you use? Was it already running when you called startx? If not can you test if starting NetworkManager before calling startx solves the problem?

Yes -- a missing network manager was the problem -- thanks for your help
