hello!

1. i turn on some application (no matter which one) and use it normally,... maybe one or i have more than 1 program opened...

then i click on X

what happens is this: programs dissapear / wallpapers dissapear / widgets dissaear -- all the wallpapers background is now black

the only things that stays is the mouse cursor which can be moved around and my two panels --- default one on the bottom and the empty one on the left (which is normally populated by icons) --- BUT both of them are without icons, widgets, anything (no system tray, task manager, ...) -- just dark brown empty panels (even if i chose the breeze which is bright not dark, this crash makes them dark brown).

Nothing then works anymore... (for example alt+f2,...) the only solution is go to terminal and reboot --- if i press ctrl+alt+f1 and then go back to ctrl+alt+f8 --- still the text from terminal is seen, although you can see this time a mouse cursor --- and the text is not editable, so its not really a terminal but rather a frozen picture of it... this time though the panels arenot more visible... 

anyway, again to ctrl+alt+f1 and type sudo reboot :(

tried to reproduce somehow but it happens kinds random ...after it happens also impossible to take a screenshot .... i took ittwice already but when yo uwant to save it using keyboard shortcuts, the ksnapshot doesnt save the picture.... next time ill use camera :)

Thanks for the report!

Couple questions:

do you use virtual desktops?
do you use activities?
have you tried disabling compositing with alt+shift+f12 when it happens?
can you also try in the terminal (alt+ctrl+f1) running:
killall kwin (or kwin_x11 if kwin is not found) and then running DISPLAY=:0 kwin --replace &

i have 2 virtual desktops

i dont really use activities --- although i have activity manager icon present next to the K button (but only one activity present --- again, although i have one activity present i actually have two activities - i cannot turn off the other --- (for more info on that: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339281 )

alt+shift+f12 --- not yet, next time it happens i will try and report back what happened....
same with kwin killall i wil ltry to do that in ctrl+alt+f1...

ps. do you know maybe of some shortcut in kde that would take the screenshot automatically and save it even if the desktop is "frozen" "crashed" , ..etc... ? im asking for this bug and future ones, it might be helpful...

Hi.
I can confirm  the above solution works better than the ALT-SHIFT-F12 wich only brings screen back but the desktop has sterious issues. 

Running the above solution in a terminal (ttyX) brins me back to loginscreen and i can login again but it has less issues and its probably better to reboot ATM.

Some issues after use of the suggested solution:
Previously running applications dont come back om screen.
Cant close/resize or hide windows.
Keyboard shortcuts dont work anymore
Screen edge shortcuts dont work.

Simon, that does not tell me if it helped or not :) Also I'm a bit confused - you said in the original report that nothing worked anymore and you needed to reboot but here you are running kwin from Konsole?

When it half-crashes, can you try killing plasmashell process? Either from Konsole or from tty1 (ctrl+alt+f1) and see if it unfroze your system?

Also watch out what stuff are you actually sharing; lots of torrents in that output ;)

i reinstalled plasma 5 + project neon5...the output from Comment #10 is when desktop half crashed but left the konsole which was running plasmashell and firefox oen so i could barely copy/paste it...before even that hanged... and so i didnt check it... but anyway.. even with a fresh install plasma5 + project-neon5 + vivd packages..it still haf crashes....

my final comment:

what i did to resolve the issue - in case it helps for anyone:

i had 2 problems which made my desktop to always be in half crashed state -

1. kbuildsycoca5 couldnt save its configuration because it ddint have enough rights for its configuration file...  which is /home/(myname)/.cache/ksycoca5  (and all other ksycoca* files in that folder)

then i preformed 

myname@mycomputer:-$ kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental
kbuildsycoca5 running...
Recreating ksycoca file ("/home/fani/.cache/ksycoca5", version 300)

2. a bunch of qml-module-kde packages were not installed, most importantly  kwindowsystem.... i dunno maybe some dependency problem in updating made them uninstalled/removed... after performing this:

sudo aptitude install qml-module-org-kde-kio qml-module-org-kde-kwindowsystem qml-module-org-kde-kcoreaddons qml-module-org-kde-draganddrop qml-module-org-kde-solid qml-module-org-kde-extensionplugin qml-module-org-kde-kquickcontrols qml-module-org-kde-analitza qml-module-org-kde-runnermodel qml-module-org-kde-kquickcontrolsaddons


it then started to work again....i mean..my desktop was visible once again....

the only thing that (only visually) still is not working is,... it seems different programs which ihave installed in kde5 still kept theit kde4 icons (like systemsettings, dolphin, okular, k3b, gwenview, kate, libreoffice,...), some of them are correctly kde5 icons (ie. amarok, ktorrent) and some of them became invisible (on panel) (or black squares in the menu) (for example: firefox, firefox nightly, fslint, dosbox, amule, skype, viber, ...)

but thats a problem for another thread...

sorry - typo - 

i *first* made the config kycoca files open (with permissions changed to "777" (aka rwxrwxrwx), and *then* i performed "noincremental" on them. before i did that it would return error that the config file ksycoca is not writable.
