Although I am working from my university network where I connect to sciencedirect directly, when I do an onlinesearch I get:
Searching 'ScienceDirect' failed with error message: Error downloading http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=QuickSearchURL&_method=submitForm&sdSearch=Search&qs_all=A%20logarithmic%20reduction%20algorithm%20for%20quasi-birth-death%20processes%201993&qs_author=&resultsPerPage=10 - server replied: Not Found

The same problem applies to Jstor

Please test this patch if it fixes the search issue for ScienceDirect

I am afraid that I have very limited c++ or C programming knowledgfe and hence will not be able to test it. I could however compile the Kbibtex source using cmake but not sure what I need to do with the patch you've sent.

I have tested my own patch on two machines using different Linux distributions. ScienceDirect is now working again.
I cannot observe any problems with JSTOR. Maybe you problems were only temporary? Databases go offline sometimes for maintenance...
