Configure e-mailclient via
kcmshell4 componentchooser to point to /home/a/bin/tb

type a@b.com
Hold shift and press right mouse button while holding the mouse over a@b such that an underline is visible.
Click 'Send Email to'

I now got a response that it cannot find /usr/bin/thunderbird. Additionally, I don't get any option to set it in any other way. 

It should have said that it cannot find /home/a/bin/tb or it should have found /home/a/bin/tb.

It might be that the componentchooser component is not working, but it is konsole which depends on this component for opening links.
