when using documents in a 4.x application (e.g. gwenview) inside a plasma5 session the file does not get added to the recent documents apparently (most notibly doesn't show up in kickoff's list)

Well, kdelibs4 writes to $KDEHOME and plasma5 reads from $XDG_CONFIG_HOME, I suppose...

Basically everything is KF5 now; I don't think this is worth fixing at this point.
