currently a message appears "blablabla is a folder" - and later opening a file shows just the home directory as a starting point instead of the given folder.

I dont know what the RFE: prefix to this description means...
but I think the user wants to open a folder in kate directly.
either from Dolphin or from the command line.

I think this could be closed as duplicate of bug #288944
