I'm not sure whether that's a problem in the font installer or a bug in the font, but Google Font Lato (http://www.google.com/fonts#UsePlace:use/Collection:Lato) has two font weights, Hairline (100) and Light (300), which cannont be installed at the same time. 
It is not obvious to me what the cause of the problem is, i.e. how the font name is determined by kcm_fontinst. I used Fontforge to see whether I can change any occurrence of 'Light' in the name of the Hairline font variant somehow, but I couldn't get kcm_fontinst to accept it while Lato-Light is installed.
