When I open a file, the file is selected and is slightly neon blue, it might be great for selecting files when you want to be sure when a file is selected, but for a file that has been opened, it is not so desirable.

Reproducible: Always

Thanks for the report! The problem that the tinted icons/previews do not look good in some situations has been reported already.

Enda, are you suggesting that files opened by a click do not stay selected?

Yes, I guess. The file could be selected by clicking the green plus sign in the top left hand corner of the icon or clicking the icon while holding CTRL (and then the tinting activated).

Otherwise, clicking to open the file could mean only the filename is highlighted and not the icon.
