This feature is being implemented in quite a lot of place, AFAIK, including web gtalk in gmail, google hangout, and Nokia N9.

Nowadays contact number of a single person is quite large, even there's only 50 contacts it's hard to find the specific contact you're talking to. 

And this would somehow diminish the requirement about favorite a contact, just like quick dial in chrome and firefox: they don't allow you to directly add a page to quick dial. Display the most recent contacted people is quite straight forward.

Dear user, unfortunately Telepathy is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
