Sentry Crash Report:

Description Joe Biden 2013-07-29 03:28:12 UTC
No config changes from Beta2. Now on RC1, sends with SSL/PLAIN no longer work. Big regression...

Failed to transport message. Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN. Choose a different authentication method. The server responded: "5.7.0 Incorrect username or password. (#MBR1212)"

Reproducible: Always

We didn't change smtp code long time ago...
So don't know why it worked before and not now for you.

did you check what you smtp supported ?
Comment 2 piedro 2013-07-29 14:23:36 UTC
I get the same problem, though I think this is not an authentificatuíon problem.

instead I think that there is another akonadi hickup. I remeber a similar problem a few years ago, when you couldn't change the password of smtp because akonadi would still cling to the old ones ...

There was no way to restore unless you deleted all files and completely started with a clean kmail to setup all accounts again ...

I checked with thunderbird - the same settings work there - its just one account in kmail that suddenly doesn't work anymore ... no idea ...

thx for reading ,

"There was no way to restore unless you deleted all files and completely started with a clean kmail to setup all accounts again ... " ?
sendmail is not an akonadi agent...
So for me it's not akonadi related
Comment 4 piedro 2013-07-29 16:41:33 UTC
Well, it says "Mail dispatcher agent" in the akonadi console. It certainly looks like an akonadi agent to me. But maybe it's not from a technlogical standpoint.

thx for looking into this,

Every first send of an email from Kmail (4.11.1) opensuse 12.3 I get this message "Failed to transport message. Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN. Choose a different authentication method. The server responded: "5.7.0 Incorrect username or password. (#MBR1212)".
All subsequent attempts to resend fial until i do this:-
"Setting/Configure Kmail/Accounts/Sending/"select outgoing account"/Modify/Advanced/Auto Detect".
The Autodetect flashes to show it "did" the job but the settings remain the same. If i now reopen the email sitting in the Outbox and send, it works. It also happens with the first reply instead of a compose/send.
I always use the "New Mailing list email" option as i only use this account
for mailing lists.

On my other login that i use for all other communication, it seems to work fine.

I'm also seeing this bug, using Kontact 4.12.3

It manifested after changing the password to an IMAP account and trying to update the same. Fetching functionality works fine (AFAICS) with the new / updated password, but sending / SMTP, also with updated password, generates this error message.

The proposed workarounds aren't working for me, or else I'm doing them wrong.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.
Comment 8 Denis Kurz 2017-01-07 22:23:15 UTC
Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
