Description Blackpaw 2013-07-05 21:32:59 UTC
The standard KDE menubar is missing and can't be enabled even by editing muon-updaterrc. There is a combodrop down in the bottom right corner of the window that appears to contain the old menu bar.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start muon-updater

Actual Results:
No menubar

Expected Results:
Mebubar

KDE 4.11 Beta 2 on kubuntu 13.10

I noticed this on my desktop but Muon was working fine on my laptop with the same KDE version (4.11.1), which I had just updated from 4.9 or so. I'd noticed this since the update to 4.11 on my desktop, but hadn't gotten around to reporting it until now. Because of the difference between my two computers, I knew it had to be a configuration somewhere. Looking a the ~/.kde/share/config/muon-updaterrc file showed a line with "MenuBar=Disabled".

I haven't been using my laptop for some time, so it was a bit behind in updates. I do remember somewhere down the line that Muon updater had buttons on the bottom and no menubar on the top. Perhaps at that time there was a way to turn off the menubar, and I had done that, but I don't recall. I just remember no menubar and buttons on the bottom.

Simple fix would be to have Muon updater either ignore the "MenuBar=Disabled", since it no longer has the buttons on the bottom, or have it automatically remove it from the config file.

Same on my laptop, just upgraded from kubuntu 13.04 to kubuntu 13.10
No more menu bar nor icons bar on top of the window
only a list button with different actions selectable at bottom left, and "install" and "quit" buttons bottom right of the screen

The menu bar was too technical and has been removed in favor of a more concise dropdown menu with just the bare minimum of actions.

If you prefer a more elaborate interface I suggest you use muon package manager going forward.

What??!! A menubar is to technical! Are you trying to out do the Gnome Devs?

Strongly disagree, users are used to and expect menubars, removing them only confuses people.

Plus you are breaking std KDE UI guidelines.

I agree the UI of Muon updater is broken, no menu bar and the buttons should be along the top of the window.

Please feel free to use the muon package manager for updates. It features a menubar and everything.

The updater is what pops up in the notifications though.

And it just seems so unnecessary - was there really a flood of complaints from people that they couldn't figure out this menu thingy?

Its just bad UI design, if every app went its own way KDE would be a usability mess.

I hate to do a "me too" post, but I have to agree. Muon Package manager has a difference use case and is not well suited for quickly updating.

I also dislike the way rekonq has made a non-standard (chrome copy) menu and refuses to make it optional.

I hope this is not the way KDE app development goes. Then you have to spend time trying to figure out where the individual developers have placed the menu.
