I guess KWallet is being replaced, so I hope this is something that can be considered there as well, but:

When I login, several things request the wallet, and so within a minute of each other, I have to type my password twice. This is quite annoying, I think that KWallet should recognize the initial authentication at startup for at least a minute so that this annoyance is avoided.

What's the state of the option labeled "Close when last application stops using it" on your system. You can find it on System Settings / Account Details / KDE Wallet page. If it's ticked, then you may want to clear it.
