Description Michael Mair-Keimberger 2013-02-14 06:56:16 UTC
Since kde-4.10 i have a really annoying bug. It's pretty simple - I can't change the wallpaper.
Everytime i'll change, stop kde and start it again i get the same default wallpaper again.

So far the symptoms:
* it happen everytime, even with a complete new user.
* taskbar settings won't get lost.
* it won't happen with folder-view layout (i'm using default desktop)
* it happen with grouping desktop - even grouping desktop won't get saved, it goes back to default desktop.
* plasma adds everytime i login new default wallpaper settings into .kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletrc, which means this file would get quite bloated after a while. Even make it read-only wont help.

Possible reason for the problem:
I think the problem belongs to my multihead setup, because if i create a new user and login, on all three screens i have the same output (only clones of the main). If i won't change the monitor settings and change the wallpaper it gets saved. Besides that, it seems like not many people have this problem...

Workaround:
I also could find an workaround.
As i already mentioned before, i made plasma-desktop-appletrc read-only. However this alone doesn't help, but if i make plasma-desktoprc read-only too the wallpaper won't set back to default. (after a relogin i also see always changes in this file)
Unfortunately this is a really bad workaround, because right now i can't change anything in plasma. Because of the read-only nothing get saved. Furthermore i always get a message at login that plasma-desktoprc is only read-only. Really annoying.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. login into kde
2. change the wallpaper
3. logout and login again
Actual Results:
the wallpaper is set back to default

I also made an bugreport at bugs.gentoo.org. This is mostly just a copy-paste. Below is also my systemconfiguration, However, i think really important is that i have a multihead setup, means i'm using 3 monitors.

This bug seems to fixed with the latest version of kde (4.10.1), so i'll gonna close this bug :)
Comment 2 Michael Mair-Keimberger 2013-08-17 14:17:25 UTC
I've updated to kde-4.11 today and this problem appeared again. It's the exact same behavior than with kde-4.10. Only the "default" wallpaper changed to an simple black background. However the workaround still works
Comment 3 corktowner 2016-05-10 07:43:28 UTC
I reported a similar problem shortly after kde 4 was released. Setting custom folders for my desktop slideshow is not saved. If I make any changes to my desktop settings, my slideshow falls back to what I believe is system wallpapers. My list of folders is gone. This is still a problem to this day! Plus I cannot find any reference to my original post, made years ago. I have stopped reporting problems because they never get addressed. I should switch back to gnome.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug has already been resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
