DNG image edit mode - no metadata available

Description bogdan 2012-09-25 01:37:13 UTC
- Metadata for DNG files from Lightroom 3 and 4 are not displayed.
- In preview mode only limited metadata is available for viewing. IPTC metadata is completely empty for DNG while is fully available for JPEG in preview and in Edit mode
- Metadata is available for viewing and editing in LR, which means that it is there.
-It is possible that other types of DNG files have the same issue, but I could not test that.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a DNG in edit mode
2. all metadata is greyed out
3. -

Expected Results:
To see metadata: EXIT, IPTC and XMP

Show metadata

DNG album view - some metadata available
Comment 3 bogdan 2012-09-25 23:02:50 UTC
It is the Image Editor I was talking about.

However, since you brought it up the Metadata editor is just a little better. It shows something, but it is not complete. For example the DNG file was geotagged, but the Metadata editor does not show this information.
On the other hand, in the main album view if a picture is selected, that information (GPS) is available in the EXIF section.

I will attach the two views

DNG image edit mode - no metadata available

In this mode all the metadata information is greyed out.

Do you know panels from right side bar, where metadata, gps, properties, etc... informations are available ?

In editor, you can also display thumbbar with tootips displaying metadata as in icon-view...

The best idea will be to provide us a test image which shows the described problems for you. Maybe you can scale down an image in lightroom to 1x1 px and add the metadata that you describe, then attach it here.

Gilles,

there are 2 things different here:

Marcel,

A DNG is like a RAW file. It cannot be resized. if you need a LR DNG I can setup a ftp site :
Please do
ftp hlevca.com as anonymous. it is the only file there.
Please let me know when you are done so I will disable the service

On another note:
in showfoto the metadata is visible in edit mode. It must just be a quirk in the way digikam handles Image Edit mode for LR DNG files.

One nice thing is that digikam gets right the star settings from LR/generic DNG. So there is something reading the metadata, but the display gets truncated in one view and is completely greyed out in Edit mode.
Comment 11 Marcel Wiesweg 2012-09-26 20:58:13 UTC
There are two issues here, metadata access from the file and a UI problem. For the first, I resort to the exiv2 command line tool to rule out any secondary influence.

1) Neither exiv2 nor exiftool show IPTC metadata in a file. Which usually means there is none. exiftool shows some makernotes which exiv2 (and thus digikam) does apparently not support.

2) I cannot reproduce the problem with the image editor metadata panel here in a short test
Comment 12 bogdan 2012-09-26 22:30:35 UTC
I added another file on my ftp server and removed the old one. The new one has GPS data and it is shown it the normal album view in digikam, but in the Image Editor view nothing is shown ( greyed-out, the initial 2 attached print screens show this issue).

An exiv2 test shows the information below. You can notice that exiv2 has some problems reading Sony2 directory, which contains a lot of information. I wonder how can tat be read in other tools than LR. DNG is supposed to be an open format, but allows (if I remember well) some proprietary data?

I am surprised that you cannot reproduce the Image Editor greyed out issue. What could be different on my system?

All Makernotes are proprietary, unfortunately. With unpublished specification. All support depends on reverse engineering.

Not sure. I still cannot reproduce. Anyone else?

I cannot reproduce it here too...

Bogdan,

This file still valid using last digiKam 4.2.0 and Exiv2 0.24 ?

Unfortunately the problems still exist. The normal mode show the metadata in the DNG file, while in Edit mode everything is greyed out

Bogdan,

Can yo share some DNG files where problem occurs.

Comment 18 bogdan 2014-09-04 13:00:25 UTC
Gilles,

This bug system does not allow creating attachments that big. I am sharing two links with you on google drive. One of them should work. If you are finished with it please let me know so I can remove it because the share is public and anyone can access it

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5r7QXFf0ZlaZHljVFZVTVpxNTQ/edit?usp=sharing

https://drive.google.com/a/hlevca.com/file/d/0B5r7QXFf0ZlaZHljVFZVTVpxNTQ/edit?usp=sharing_eil

I still can't understand why the Image Editor can't display metadata while in View mode everything is there.
Comment 19 caulier.gilles 2014-09-04 13:16:26 UTC
Bogdan,

DNG file downloaded...

Problem is not reproducible into current implementation from git/master, as you can see in this screenshot :

https://www.flickr.com/photos/digikam/14950901699/sizes/o/

In image Editor, all metadata are filled with relevant Exif, IPTC, and XMP into.

Perhaps there is a garbage in digiKam configuration file.
I recommend to rename this file from your home directory :

~/.kde4/share/config/digikam.rc
to
~/.kde4/share/config/digikam.rc.old

This will reset all settings. Restart digiKam and check again.

Gilles,

The screen shot you shared does not show a Image Editor capture but rather the view mode. As I said in normal viewer I see metadata too. Can you post one with a capture of the Image editor of the DNG I shared with you?

Look well. Image Editor is on the right side of my screenshot (:=)))...

Bogdan,

Did you try my recommendation in comment #19 about digiKam config file ?
