One Time I was reading a PDF on Okular, going down on the document with the mousewheel, the other time was just closing Firefox tabs.

The crash can be reproduced some of the time.

DO NOT - SERIOUSLY, NOT! - USE THAT DRIVER VERSION!

Downgrade or upgrade but that version has potential to cause physical and permanent damage on your HW. It has been withdrawn by nvidia 2 days after release or so and i frankly wonder why it still shows up.
Was it shipped by ubuntu or did you install it yourself?


Regardless of this

there seems a bug in the shader implementation of the x64 nvidia driver, disable "opengl 2 shaders" in the 3rd tab of "kcmshell4 kwincompositing" to work around it

Hallo Thomas.
The nvidia driver 295.40 ist supplied by the package nvidia-current - under "Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS".
It was a fresh ubuntu install.
The driver was installed throught Ubuntu's Restricted Drivers Manager.
Newly I installed nvidia-current-updates and became the driver 295.49.
 "opengl 2 shaders" is now disable.

Ok, thaks for the info.
It seems like ubuntu had a bad pick, but the updates include a newer version. [1]

I don't really know how their packages are setup, but if "nvidia-current" is the regular one and joe user is supposed to explicitly select "nvidia-current-updates" to get rid of the 295.40 version, they should rather change that.
