This idea is a part of my vision to make the KDE desktop more effective. It is inspired by Meego Harmattan and Gnome 3.

This effect would be used with a new workspace divided in three columns

The current implementation of the present effect show previews in a layout over the desktop.
If the user click outside a preview (ie. on the desktop), the present effect is untriggered.

My proposal is to create a new present effect that show the previews at the center of the desktop and that allow to interact with plasmoids of the desktop without to be untriggered.

The mockup illustrates the workflow presented in this idea.

- Competes "Show Desktop" and "Dashboard"
- requires definition of a "weak strut" to generate the presenting area (btw: i user a vertically aligned screen...)
- binding it to the start button is cloning gnome and imo cumbersome - when i want to use present windows i usually don't want to launch an application and if i want to launch an application, i don't care about the window stack that will be altered the very next moment anyway. That does not mean that you could not trigger the effect from whatnot, but i doubt the launcher approach.

"Semi" - depends on whether the "desktop" is a "desktop" or (retagged as) a "dashboard" (ie. can be raised fullscreen above all windows, like in the netbook mode)

In the latter case it would be sufficient to shrink or shape the fullscreen effect input window.

It's not done by using the current effect structure only, though.

So let's wait and see. Please open again when the idea got implemented in the desktop shell. Till then there seems nothing to be done here.

I already have a working plasmoid for the menu: https://gitorious.org/dal
I put it on a classic desktop workspace.
I created an icon that trigger "show desktop". It minimizes all the windows so I can access to the menu and see the other plasmoids.
However, windows are not restored when I launch a new application from the menu.

and back to resolved later. Please leave it in this state. At the current time we cannot yet say whether this will be implemented or not - to get some input about it we use brainstorm. It doesn't make sense to have feature requests open which ill only maybe be implemented.

At the current time there is nothing to do, which means resolved (maybe) later.
