Perhaps allowing more than once instance of the thumbnail ioslave helps in this case. You can easily do this by locating a file called "thumbnail.protocol" in your KDE installation and adding "maxInstances=2" or higher. This tells kio that it can use more than a one thumbnail generator process to fulfill requests at a time. If doing so makes the problem worse, simply revert you changes back. see comment #1. Actually, I didn't see this bug for a while. It's gone on my new PC. But if I catch it again - I test this solution.
