When using hotkey to pause playback (CTRL-ALT-POS1) and resuming with the same hotkey the playback volume jumps from its initial value (~ 60%) to 100%.
This is quite annoying and reproducable.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start playback of an MP3
1b. If not already in this state: turn volume to 50%
2. Pause playback with hotkey (CTRL-ALT-POS1)
3. Resume playback with the same hotkey
Actual Results:  
Volume jumps to 100% with playback resumed

Expected Results:  
playback resumes on last volume value

Bug seems somehow linked to Bug 285677. But with different initiating action.

Which phonon backend do you use? if you use the phonon-backend-vlc this is bug 296589

I confirm using phonon-backend-vlc.
Is switching to the gstreamer backend a temporary solution? Which one is to prefer in general?

That entirely depends on your usecase. If you need an Equalizer then the gstreamer backend is your choice. I for one am quite happy with the vlc backend, but I don't use direct sound output from the PC but go through an external amplifier so this bug is not relevant for me as I have my PC volume set to 100% anyway.
