I can't reproduce this with gwenview 2.8.2 (KDE 4.8.2, Qt 4.8.1, Kubuntu 11.10). Even in 100% view the image loads fine. Initial Memory consumption in "fit to screen" mode is also OK (~150MB). Works fine for me using KDE SC 4.8.3. If this crash is 100% reproducible for the reporter, please paste the backtrace here.
