Sentry Crash Report:

Description Falmarri 2012-03-29 20:21:03 UTC
Telepathy will silently disconnect all of my accounts with no messages whatsoever. I notice this most offen when I come back from being idle for any period of time, but this could simply be because I don't notice when exactly it goes offline.

However, it seems like whenever this happens, it seems it corresponds with this entry in the syslog:

Mar 29 12:53:00 user org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper: QDBusConnection: system D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
Mar 29 12:53:00 user dbus[1080]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper'

My syslog is full of identical messages. powerdevil throws that message about every 1-15 minutes.

That would make sense with the occurance happening most frequently when idle. But I've also seen it happen when I was actively typing in a chat window as well.

I've already tried logging with this

GABBLE_PERSIST=1 GABBLE_DEBUG=all /usr/libexec/telepathy-gabble > ~/gabble.log

but nothing at all gets output to the log during or after a disconnect.

Do you have some music player active while this happens (Amarok or Clementine)?
Comment 2 Falmarri 2012-03-29 20:29:06 UTC
Occasionally I have Amarok running. But not consistently. And a lot of the time it's just paused or idle. But it also happens when it's not running.

I found a workaround to the bug. If I turn off "dim display" in the power management settings, I no longer get disconnected. This is fine on my desktop since it turns off my monitors anyway. But I can see this being an issue on a laptop.

I also noticed this - it correlates with me typing or moving the mouse after a time of being idle. The time of being idle is short under 5 minutes (the default away-on-idle time). I do not recall it happening when being constantly active on the computer. I do sometimes, but not always, have Clementine running when this happens.

It definitely happens after being idle for some time - e.g. it just happened again after I returned to the computer after typing a text. So the correlation with powerdevil Falmarri saw might just be a coincidence - maybe power management causes telepathy to set the away status?

@Falmarri: Does it disconnect you immediately when the display dims, or does it happen, as it does here, right when you become active again?
Comment 6 Falmarri 2012-04-13 17:11:39 UTC
It's hard to say when exactly it occurs, whether it's sometime durring idle or after coming back. Since there's no messages, I just occasionally look at my contact list and realize I'm not online.

But since I turned off "dim display after 5 minutes" I haven't had this occur a single time. So I can pretty much confirm that it's SOMETHING to do with the interaction between powerdevil trying to dim my display (which it doesn't. It doesn't do anything.).

There have been some recent changes to this, does this still happen in git master?
Comment 8 David Edmundson 2012-04-21 13:00:53 UTC
This is hopefully fixed. Please reopen if not.

I experience this on Kubuntu 12.04 with KDE 4.8.3. It happens with nothing open, just telepathy-kde running and connected. The disconnect happens immediately after the screen brightens after having been dimmed by power management (basically, the moment the screen gets dimmed by power management, telepathy will disconnect when I start using the computer again, even if its a second after the screen was dimmed). I'll try and test this on project-neon's telepathy to see if it has it as well.

@Craig, don't bother - we know it's broken in 0.3 which is what Kubuntu has.

0.4 is due very soon. Thanks anyway.
