"New Tab" command when activated via keyboard shortcut opens a new tab with default konsole profile instead of profile of the currently active tab.

The change is intentional. See bug 184788

In the upcoming KDE SC 4.9, a new action "Clone Tab" is added for the requested & lost feature. See bug 292518
