3. Close kmymoney
4. Advance computer clock to next year
5. reopen kmymoney, to the register
6. These operations are inaccessible

Did you try to change the filter settings? See more at http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/kde4/online-manual/reference.html#reference.menus.view and uncheck "Hide reconciled transactions"
