Description Dotan Cohen 2012-02-16 13:47:00 UTC
Currently there is no way for the user to see that a photo may have multiple versions. It would be nice if the thumbnail border of photos having multiple versions were to appear as a stack, to indicate the presence the other versions.

Thanks.

Information in Right sidebar tab is not enough ?

No, Gilles, the user looks only at the thumbnails. See also this blog post, where a user (I think that you know the guy!) describes the situation as "photos disappearing":
http://scribblesandsnaps.wordpress.com/2012/02/15/prevent-photos-in-digikam-from-disappearing/

To be honest, I feels as if I am "loosing" something with Versioning, but I did not know why. That is why I don't use it, despite anticipating the feature for a long time. Now I know what the "loss" is, it is the knowledge that the original still exists and can be easily accessed.

Alternatively, an overlay icon similar to the one for symbolic links would be a big help.

I agree - the information needs to be visual. You should see the thumbnail photo and know from the icon that this is a photo with multiple versions.

A stacked icon, where it looks like a bunch of slides stacked one on top of the other (and with the most recent version visible in the icon) will indicate this easily. That way, you don't need to look at two places on the screen to find out the information that you need. You can deduce it immediately from the looking at the photo thumbnail.

Problem solved.

I checked the code for the imagedelegate and we already have something in there. Why is it disabled?
I just enabled it and it looks something like this... see screenshot.

Gilles, Marcel,

why was the code disabled?

I believe the layout broke at some point, particularly if the photo is grouped as well. Not sure anymore.
I'd like a better metaphor somehow, the icon does not really tell me what it means.

Dotan,

I remember to have work a little bit on this topic in the past. Can you check with last digiKam 4.10.0 ?

Maik,

this topic about versioning is old now, and i don't remember if something has changed. As i can see with versioned images, i do not see any indicator over thumbnail about this property.
