Comment 3 andreas hoffmann 2012-01-11 11:49:35 UTC
I've just logged in to the opensuse 12.1 machine on the console or via xvnc. The kde4 is the default version for opensuse 12.1. After login i got the error-message that ksmserver couldnt be started and the chash assistent which created the crashfiles attached. After clicking the crash-wizard away and the error message too im thrown out to login prompt (kdm) again.

One of the .kcrash attached were from direct console login (2nd attachment) and the other one (1st attachment) was from typing startkde as root from an xtern in a twm session.

Else I didn't do anything. It just appears all out of a sudden after a machine reboot. The day before I've installed pending security patches from suse on this box. If there were any x kde or qt related packes involved I dont know it was a lot i just accepted all proposed updates.
Comment 4 Richard Ems 2012-01-12 15:04:09 UTC
Me too.

I have exact the same problem. After installing some updates on openSUSE 12.1 and rebooting, kde won't start anymore.

Andreas, are you using the propietary nvidia driver? I am. Did you found any solution?
I tried downgrading several packages from the update, but it still kept crashing.
You can check which packages you updated at /var/log/zypp/history.

Comment 5 andreas hoffmann 2012-01-12 15:46:58 UTC
No, I'm using a small matrox graphics card its supported out of the box by OpenSuse, I don't even know which driver module, as I didn't cared until now. Ive just set it up and it ran until yesterday until I rebooted. The updates were days ago as it waas not necessary to reboot the machine I didnt rebooted after each update. So I dont know which of the update jobs I ran in the last 2 weeks caused it.

My solution was to install gnome und use gnome now until its fixed.

Hi Richard,

could you please log in to this bug reports and also add a few votes
to the bug? maybe we can raise the importance so it might to be
investigated more early :) But only if you have enough votes left as
there are a lot of Desktops for windows and I just use gnome in the
meantime. But my favorite is kde.
The voting feature is in the top of the bug the link to give votes
looks like this: "(vote)" after the number of current votes.

Thanks

Greetings
Andreas

Comment 7 Richard Ems 2012-01-16 21:09:27 UTC
I found the error in my installation.
Strangely I had the Packman Factory repository configured. After changing this repository to the 12.1 one, and removing all the installed Packman Factory packages and reinstalling the 12.1 ones everything is working fine again.

I am pretty sure I did not add that Packman repo pointing to Factory. I suppose the downloaded repo list was pointing the Packman to Factory as I did the update from 11.4 to 12.1.

To remove all wrong installed Factory pacakges I did as root:

rpm -e --nodeps `rpm -qai | egrep "^Name [ ]*:|^Distribution:" | grep -B 1 Factory | grep "^Name" | awk '{print $3}'`

and to install the needed packages again:

zypper ve
zypper inr

So, this bug is no bug for me, just a configuration error on my system.

cheers, Richard

Bug fixed for me solution from comment Nr.7 from Richard Ems worked for me. It was just a configuration error of the OpenSuSE12.1 distribution.

although my system is kde kubuntu saucy with project neon, this crash happens only in kde mode (not project neon) . when updating via aptitude in konsole it also has around 50-60 unresolved dependencies...am.. i always update using safe-upgrade command.

now i can only boot in project neon.

also when this error happens in the beginning in text mode it says some files or directories are missing...but it goes so fast i dont have time to see it nad to write it down..it has something like .../ibus/.. .in between...

also my keyboard doesnt work so i cannot type in my password in dr. konqi and i had to manually attach the kcrash reports...

thank you
Simon
