This only happens in KDE 4.8rc2. With the same nm in KDE 4.7.4 this doesn't happen. Rebooting system/restarting plasma doesn't help.

Click on plasma nm icon in system tray in KDE 4.8rc2

Expected Results:  
Plasma nm without artifacts.

This is a known problem that I could never reliably reproduce. I do not when I will be able to try to fix, there are a lot of other more important problems to solve.
