This is a duplicate of bug 277408, which is incorrectly closed. I was unable to reopen it, sorry.

As I understand bug 277408, the selection disappears not only from the source, but also from the destination, which is what I experience. Specifically, the selected rectangle turns white immediately when I start dragging it, irrespective if I use the mouse or arrow keys. As I drag that white rectangle around, I may see strange artifacts inside it depending on what colors and shapes was originally in it, and the background that I drag it over.

This is a regression between KDE 4.6.0 and 4.7.2. Specifically, Kolourpaint
works in OpenSUSE 11.4 and Tumbleweed, but after
dist-upgrading to OpenSUSE 12.1, Kolourpaint is (for all my purposes) useless.
Unlike bug 287749, downgrading Kolourpaint to 4.6.0 (the good old OpenSUSE 11.4 package) while running KDE 4.7.2 fixes this.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Fill the background with a non-white color.
2) Make a selection. The selection tool has 2 modes, use the one that does not treat white as transparent.
3) Click and move the selection to a new destination.

Actual Results:  
You see 2 white rectangles on the colored background, both the source and destination of the move.

Expected Results:  
There should be only 1 white rectangle, the source. The destination should contain what was originally selected.

I fear I do not understand your description.
Is this maybe the same as the problem in bug #277167 ?

If not, please tell me: What colors did you select as foreground, which one as background in the dual-color tool in the color toolbox ?
What color is your background filled with ?
Maybe you can save an image before and after the selection problem as attachment here, please.

From the description, I would say no (this has nothing to do with pasting or writing text).
From WiseLord's screencast (comment 4), I would say YES!

In WiseLord's screencast, at time of 1 minute, he starts dragging transparent selections around. Notice how selections turn white immediately when starting the drag, so the content is not preserved. That's what I'm talking about!

In my «steps to reproduce», step 2 should probably be the opposite, namely to use transparent mode.
