I was working on tagging faces in my photo collection. I scanned the collection for faces, and then was working through the list of detected faces in the "unknown" face tag assigning relevant people tags. After some time, I noticed some activity on my hard drive LED, and then all the faces disappeared.
If I go to individual photos there are still face tags without people assigned, but nothing shows up under the "unknown" face tag.
If I start digikam from the command line, and then click on the "unknown" face tag I get the following message in the console:
digikam(5301)/digikam (core) Digikam::ImageAlbumModel::slotResult: Failed to list url:  "Internal Error

and it still reproducible with 2.3.0 release ?

I upgraded to 2.3.0 and it still does not show anything against the "unknown" face tag, but has unlabelled faces visible on individual photos.

When I first start digikam from a terminal it initially comes up with the following lines:

QSqlDatabasePrivate::removeDatabase: connection 'ConnectionTest' is still in use, all queries will cease to work.
digikam(9130)/digikam (core) Digikam::ImageInfoJob::slotResult: Failed to list url:  "" 
digikam(9130)/digikam (core) Digikam::ImageInfoJob::slotResult: Failed to list url:  ""

And then if I click on the "unknown" face tag the following shows up:

digikam(9130)/digikam (core) Digikam::ImageAlbumModel::slotResult: Failed to list url:  "Internal Error

Crashing ioslave? Have a look at the last lines of the ~/.xsession-errors file while the problem occurs.

Can you reproduce the dysfunction using last digiKam 4.2.0 ?
