On a default kubuntu install, after letting the laptop idle, the screen eventually blanks, but after that, nothing can turn it back on.

Are you able to switch to the root console using Ctrl+Alt+F1 when it hangs?

I confirm this. the system keeps running (for  example, a movie or an audio file will keep playing in the background) by there is no way to bring it back...
