Description josvanr 2011-11-02 22:52:46 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.2)
OS: Linux

on my small laptop screen I use

xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.4x1.4

to get some extra screen space. All windows etc scale down in size this way, so window borders etc take up less space and there is more space left for the actual content. On my 1366x768 laptop screen for instance, it is virtually impossible to use gimp in the normal resolution. A simple dialog will take up half the screen. However when I scale the screen using factor 1.4 or maybe 1.8, I can work perfectly well. Now I find it practically impossible to work in the normal low resolution (the highest mode), but always scale the screen.

I was very happy to find this use of xrandr; it greatly enhances the usability of my laptop. I was surprised not to find it in the kde settings, especially, because the functionality simply is there already. I think a lot of people would use an option like this, if they could find it in the settings.

So: addition for wish list: add a setting to the 'Display and Monitor' section, which allows one to choose a scaling (eg 1.5) for the entire screen (calling xrandr --output LVDS1 (whatever) --scale 1.5x1.5)

Reproducible: Always

Expected Results:
enlarge the size of the screen

The dialog 'Display and Monitor' from 'System Settings' has an option 'Scale Display' that allows you to scale up for use on high resolution displays. There is no option to scale down: the slider has magnification factors from 1 to 3, but not lower than 1.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
