But trying so I notice that where formerly an removed and reattached album scanned in short time, (just like scanning for new images) now it takes a looooong time. So this behaviour has changed. Showing NEF without preview after removing a tag
Additional observation: at the moment, I took a tag away, Nikon RAW Pics ("NEF") do not show a thumbnail anymore!
It takes just seconds, and previews disappear!

Sound like a side effect of Exiv2 which write metadata to RAW files. Do you use this option in digiKam metadata config. panel. Which version of Exiv2 you use ? Go to Help/Components Info for details. "Thouching" means _adding_ a (keyword-)tag _or_ _removing_ one. Yes, I do use "write metadata in pic _and_ in XMP" This is a super GAU (maximum credible accident <MCA>) for me. I hope there is a solution. Axel Disabling Write Metadata to RAW file fix the problem for the future ? If yes, well it's a problem in Exiv2 i think. I CC Andreas Huggel, who is Exiv2 author. I recommend to provide a NEF raw file before and after metadata modification for future investigations. Also, this problem have been already reported in bugzilla and a solution to fix NEF files have been provided by Andreas. Note : XMP sidecar option do not touch RAW files. Sorry for ansewering late- my workday starts at 7 a.m. and end ~9 p.m. I provided two pics according to Gilles` suggestion. Pic 1: DSC_4789.NEF - (original) pic, contains one tag "Tier". I took this as appearantly "unchanged", as I never had problems with tags in NEF in earlier digiKam version before. I do not understand, what 4 "tags" should mean: 4 independant tag with the same content "tier" (maybe not really important?) Pic 2: DSC_4789_plus_new_tag.NEF - immediately after inserting the _additional_ new tag "Belege". I copied that pic, added the mentioned additional tag- and got problems. So the _basic_ pic content is identical. You call it "totally crippled structure". And this make me wandering: as both pics are definitely the same, I do not understand, wher this tagf-mixture should come from. As common sense indicates, certainly not from an additional treatment in my camera. Maybe it helps you understand my regular workflow: - Taking the picture. - Basic setting NEF plus jpg, usually DIN 100 sensitivity. - copying the pics from SD-Card to PC - starting digiKam, sometimes starting "search for new pictures" - then immediatelly tagging all new pics for some tag-types as "Tiere", "Freunde", etc. - there is only a flat hierarchical structure on two levels. - as I developed the tag-structure over some couple of years, the very tags stay stable and will not be changed later. - I showed my recent database statistics - Before the recent digiKam version, I had - the same settings- and did _NOT_ experience problems. - I had the same camera (NIKON D60)- no changes For me, there seem to appear _two_ changes: 1.) new digiKam version 2.) as described recently, I desized my digiKam database (from 145000 pic to 7800 pics) and included only relevant branches (=directories) I assumed to be necessary to prepare a selection project. As I mentioned before, too, digiKams thumbnail database would keep its size even after several booting procedures over three weeks or so. If self cleaning feature within databse would have worked prooperly, the thumbnail database shouöl have decreased from 6,7 GB (for 145000 pic) to 360 kB size at 7800 pic. Gilles made a qualified guess that this looks like an exiv2 problem, but I can't reproduce it here, so I'm passing it back to digiKam. Next, a digiKam developer should try to reproduce the issue with digiKam. You can help by describing the exact steps to perform in digiKam to get from Pic 1 to Pic 2 (if that's not clear yet from all the comments above). Once reproduced, it can be analyzed and we'll know exactly where the problem is. Andreas Axel, I tested on my computer with digiKam 2.3.0 and co with your original NEF image. I create a copy of NEF where i apply some tags. Write metadata to RAW files option have been enabled previously. I use Exiv2 0.21.1, and libkexiv2 2.1.0. The problem is not reproducible. As I knew I have to work intensively with that database, I created a selection of only 8000 pics to gain some loading speed. In "digiKam settings -> collections" I added those pics by selecting a (sub-)directory, which are stored in a number of directories. --- No I got problems: while tags had been set up hierarchical before, they look meshed up now. This looks from the quantitative perspective more or less comparible setup I put the NEF in one of the art folders It opens normal add some tags it still opens normal with image editor and with gimp add another tag every thing still normal Now I go removing albums, but it appears that I can not remove a subalbum(directory) without actually deleting it. So I have to make a second root album ¨ARTtest¨ Move several subalbums to ¨ARTtest¨ and remove my main root album ¨ART¨ from settings->etc I close dk reopen digikam digikamdb 229 MB thumbnails 3,8 GB (This is changed but much larger than expected) number of picture 29635 startuptime 20 sec (this is different from Axel´s experience) Now I add under settings->configure dk etc several subalbums that formerly has been under the rootalbum ¨ART¨ to the new ¨ARTtmp¨ I can not detect any changes in tag structure Tags in NEF are still as before NEF can still be opened normaly. Axel, what do you think I should do differently to reproduce the problems? I wonder about a few things that maybe could be related. Can there be something wrong with harddrive? Did you test db integrety as I suggested? Will be happy to do further investigations if I only had a clue how to went on. Can a corrupted db be due to corrupting NEF? "What could we do": one idea: is it possible to test database _and_ digiKam _without_ "semantic desktop" (akonadi-server and similar stuff)? 2.) defect hdrive? a hidden failure could happen everywhere... but installation, pics _and_ database are on my boot hdrive whch is running nicely and beeing checked "ok" 3.) Another Consideration: digiKam offers to apply several settings to be checked, as exif, xmp iptc. I always activate _all_ crosses. And I cross install _into_ Nepomuk, _never_ from Nepomuk _into_ digiKam. Maybe there is a filed size problem or a limited number of crosses allowable? waht would happen, if the total amount of tags digiKam handles do not "fit" into a picture"? What happens, if Nepomuk fails writing tags correctly into its database? Or data-exchnge between pics and Nepomuk is questioned? I always assumed that NEF means "Nikon Electronic Image Format", so what means "RAW-NEF"? If I assume, that digiKam statistics base on automated procedures, I have to conclude, that digiKam only recognizes 364 pictures as NIKON RAW-Format (out of 36168). Something is strange, I believe. Am I wrong? Axel The right value is RAW-NEF in DB stat. NIKON-NEF is probably an internal ID used in beta version. Now all is RAW-NEF. Then they might open by the betaversion you have formerly used on them. Now, just to know if this is the case, and if, which beta version was on your computer at that time. But I guess for a rebuild you need to have all the dependencies of that specific build wich is impossible I guess. And I am worried about the missing 866348 bytes. As a lots of RAW file format, NEF is based on TIFF/EP format. metadata are stored in a dedicated place to store Exif/IPTC/XMP tags. Andreas can explain more in-deep the format if necessary...

Created attachment 64378 [details] showing jpg and not opening NIKON (NEF) raw Version: 2.1.1 (using KDE 4.7.1) OS: Linux For working on a restricted number of pics, I created a small folder including the desired pics. Even after re-opening ten times, digiKam thumbnail database increased(!!) in size instead of _de-creased_. When going back to my complete original full collection, a huge number of NIKON (NEF) raw pics did not open any more. Neither with digiKam, nor with raw-therapy of darktable. Observed failure appears with older and new pics. Observation: re-opening of complete pic-collection took nearly 2 hours. Assumption: could be related with usage of tags. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: unfortunately: it is easily existent Actual Results: unfortunately given Expected Results: please provide a solution to save the pics. OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.38-11-generic Compiler: gcc
