Description Gamblit 2011-09-25 11:52:36 UTC
Version: 1.0.80 (using KDE 4.6.5)
OS: Linux

When Kopete has the "Animate tray icon", it will animate the tray icon when a message is received. If left to animate for a while (not sure how long, but let's say 5 minutes) it will slow the whole system to a crawl until I click the rotating icon (rotating at about 0.1 frames per second by then) to open ALL pending chat windows. About 10 seconds after the last chat window is opened the system returns to normal.

plasma-desktop is actually the one consuming 100% CPU, not Kopete, but the issue is related to Kopete's animating icon. If the animation is disabled the there is no slowdown whatsoever.

I notice it especially when I leave the computer for a while and return to find it god awful slow, but I've also experienced it while siting in front of the computer and ignoring a message for too long.

I can reproduce it on 4 different computers, with a mix of KDE 4.x versions, Kopete versions, and linux distros (at least Fedora and Gentoo).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
- Activate system tray animating icon
- Activate "Animate icon on message"
- Receive a message on Kopete (MSN or GTalk are the only one's I use).
- Wait 5 or 10 minutes without reading the message

Actual Results:
Animating icon is "animating" at about 0.1 fps and the whole system is slow courtesy of plasma-desktop eating the whole CPU.

Expected Results:
Icon animating as normal speed, low CPU usage.

I have "message queue" and "Queue unread messages" enabled (dunno if it makes a difference.

It has been 11 year since I reported this, and I reported it on KDE 4.6. I haven't used Kopete in maybe 6 years, and probably haven't used KDE 4 since 2016 or so.

I think it might be safe to close this bug. If it still existed someone using Kopete in the last 11 years would have probably also reported it.
