plasma kickoff menu bug

Description Jay LaCroix 2011-09-15 00:11:48 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.1)
OS: Linux

Every now and then, the kickoff menu will open in the wrong place. This happens very rarely (I'm guessing one in thirty logins or so) but when it happens, it will keep happening every time I click the K icon until I logout and login again. See attached screenshot.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
Log in to KDE from KDM. The problem may or may not happen.

Expected Results:
The kickoff menu should open directly attached to the K icon.

plasma kickoff menu bug

I have the exact same problem, using KDE 4.7.2, Arch Linux x64, kernel 3.0.7

I tried at least 10 times and I couldn't reproduce it in KDE 4.7.4
Comment 5 Yurienu 2012-02-21 08:09:06 UTC
I can confirm this bug in KDE 4.7.4 (using Qt 4.7.4, this might be related). Kickoff menu isn’t the only thing put at the top, notifications and windows too.

Actually, I never have this bug when desktop effects are disabled at startup (can be enabled later without any problems) and I start with a new session. I guess this happens when there are too many applications starting up simultaneously.

When desktop effects are enabled on startup, this bug happens almost every time, and in some rare cases when it restores applications of the last session opened.

In my case, if I log out and then log in again, it solves the matter (desktop enabled or not) (probably because KDE is starting quickly the second time).

Thank you for the feedback.

I do have the same problem with kde 4.8. But not only kickoff, but ALL plasma popups are affeceted (taskbar popups, wireless config, notifications, etc).

Normal windows are not affected, which leads me to believe its a plasma bug. It happens randomly.

One thing that might help, often during login, my screen resolution is wrong. that is why i defined a default resolution in the KDE configuration utility where you can set the screen resolution. The screen resolution is applied during login. I suspect that this could cause the problem.
Comment 8 Jay LaCroix 2012-02-21 17:58:22 UTC
In my case, I use only laptops, so my resolution is always the same even before logging in. I don't think screen resolution is the issue based on that, but I won't rule anything out either. I too also have this problem in KDE 4.8 but I do not know a 100% trigger. If it happens, I have to log out and log in again to correct it.
Comment 9 Beat Wolf 2012-02-21 18:12:50 UTC
Does it also affect like in my case the other plasma popups? (i consider kickoff a popup)
Comment 10 Jay LaCroix 2012-02-22 01:26:20 UTC
Yes, it does affect other "popups" but I usually don't pay attention, because as soon as I see Kickoff in the wrong place, I log out and log in immediately.

Ok. Lets see if we find any other comon ground:

I use Kubuntu 11.10 with kde 4.8
Its a laptop with the resolution 1600x900
The graphics card is an intel chip

Gentoo Linux with KDE 4.7.4
Laptop with 1366x768 resolution
Graphic card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Comment 13 Jay LaCroix 2012-02-22 18:27:32 UTC
Arch Linux with KDE 4.8, integrated Intel graphics. My custom built desktop with Nvidia graphics has also had the same issue. Both use 1440x900 resolution.
Comment 14 Yurienu 2012-04-16 08:21:16 UTC
Couldn’t reproduce this issue since I upgraded kernel to v3.3 and KDE to v4.8.1.
What about you?
Comment 15 Jay LaCroix 2012-04-17 02:39:45 UTC
That's hard for me to say, because this problem was always random for me. Some logins it would do this, and other times it wouldn't. For me, I think it was in the neighborhood of one in thirty or so logins? Every time in the past I thought the problem was gone, it would come back, so who knows.

Closing based on comment #14. Please feel free to reopen if you can still reproduce this with KDE 4.8.4 or later.
