Description S. Burmeister 2011-09-09 20:21:15 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.7.1)
OS: Linux

After the update to 4.7.1 I got a black screen on login, just the mouse cursor showing up. The applications and even plasma were started ok but are not visible. As soon as I disable desktop effects (ALT+SHIFT+F12) everything is visible.

This was confirmed by other opensuse users and does not seem to be specific to some graphics driver since it happens on at least nvidia binary+nouveau and intel.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Log into KDE4

Actual Results:
Black screen

Expected Results:
Visible desktop + windows

we need more info and we need to know whether only opensuse is affected.

What info? I cannot test other distros.
Comment 4 Thomas Lübking 2011-09-09 20:39:27 UTC
From the dupe ("like opera and FBReader remain visible") i'd say it /could/[1] be related to the widget style - try replacing oxygen with eg. plastique or cleanlooks

[1] could be a Qt related bug either
Comment 5 S. Burmeister 2011-09-09 20:46:37 UTC
Tried cleanlooks and even different plasma and windeco styles, same result, firefox et al stay visible everything else becomes black.

Qt is 4.7.4 btw

Xorg 7.6

Kernel 2.6.37 and also tried 3.0.3.
Comment 6 phanisvara das 2011-09-09 20:47:37 UTC
changing the widget style, or other styles or themes, doesn't help.

couldn't find any one effect responsible, and changing rendering or OpenGL options doesn't help either. turning off desktop effects globally does.
Comment 7 Thomas Lübking 2011-09-09 20:50:29 UTC
2nd shot: graphicssystem

try:
random_qt_app -graphicssystem native &
random_qt_app -graphicssystem raster &
random_qt_app -graphicssystem opengl &

does any of it "work"?
Comment 8 Martin Flöser 2011-09-09 20:51:20 UTC
this looks very much like a non-kwin issue. Please report to openSUSE at it seems that Qt is broken. If some windows work correctly with effects enabled it cannot be a KWin issue.

Setting to invalid unless new evidence emerges.

I have to confirm this bug.
Graphiccard is: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300
Driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-280.13
KDE 4.7.1 is installed from:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.4/

But inspite of other reports here in my case Firefox or/and Chromebrowser will crash when I enable desktop effects.
These applications will not remain visible and operable.
Disabling desktop effects again shows only KDE-applications like dolphin or kontact having survived.

.xsession-errors

my .xsession-errors file with desktop effects enabled directly at startup

only the firefox window shows and when I hit ALT+TAB, I see the normal switcher tiling the windows in a 4x4 fashion - 3 windows are open but I only see the firefox window thumbnail

turning off desktop effects shows all 3 windows as normally

one side-effect though: whenever I turn off desktop effects, plasma-netbook uses the whole CPU and its memory usage grows (I eventually killed it consuming 700MB and restarted afterwards) - this part is not in the file anymore though...

Here is the openSUSE bug report: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=717127
Comment 13 Paul van Erk 2011-09-10 12:42:42 UTC
I can confirm that this seems to be Qt/openSUSE related. In openSUSE 11.4 I switched to a separate Qt repository:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Qt48/openSUSE_11.4/

All is working fine after that.
Comment 14 Christophe Marin 2011-09-10 14:30:05 UTC
Changing resolution. Opensuse added this patch to the libqt4 package https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=plastik-default.diff&package=libqt4&project=KDE%3AQt

I have the same issue. Addionally, when I create a new user and try to login, the following error message is displayed: (translated from german)

"It is not possible to save the bookmarks in /home/jjj/.local/share//user-places.xbell. The error message is: not enough rights in target directory. The reason should be corrected as fast as possible. Possibly there is not enough disk space."

There is enough disk space and the user has the needed rights.
