It's not directly possible in the thumbnail view because there is no 1:1 correspondance: There can be multiple faces on a picture. In face mode, there is one thumbnail per face; everywhere else, one thumbnail per picture Following last comment from Marcel, this point :

... this point is now solved with 4.x serie.
