I'm playing with hdmi output and I realised that not only video, but sound can be sent through hdmi. After some fiddling and searching I figured out it was possible to select a profile, which can easily switch from analogue to hdmi output and back.

It would be nice if this kind of feature was more easily accessible. Either using shortcutkeys or an option in the panel interface to switch profile.

The current way (open the kmix window, go to audio setup, select speaker setup and then select hardware profile). To me this seems like a long walk for something that is so useful, how is a user supposed to find this?

a quick way to reach and set the hardware profiles easily and switch when playing a video and back when done (manually, or somehow automatically???)

You could try to use Pulseaudio. That one has a feature to select the output in about one click - given that your hardware is supported.

If you can't do it, please be aware that this wish already exist. Marking this as duplicate.

I completely disagree with your assessment that this is the same as bug 57951.

I'm talking about both display and sound configuration accessible through presets configurable when a change in hardware is detected (TV plugged in/out).

Sound profiles are a subset of that, though they could perhaps be re-used to fix this bug.

Well, the display stuff is not related to KMix at all. So you assigned your wish definitely to the wrong product. And I don't think there is any product for what you ask. You are proposing a major whole-KDE or even whole-Linux related Architecture feature. It would be a collaborative effort of dozens of people.
If you are interested in that, you need to address this to an appropriate mailing list. You should check whether projects like this are already underway. If not you should get active to formulate a proposal with exact specification what you want to achive. While unsure where this would be suited best, freedektop.org or kde-core-devel might be the way to go.

As the KMix "profile" part is done, I'll close this bug report. As requested by you, I will not use "FIXED", but "INVALID", as architecture measures should not be in bugs.kde.org.

I don't think I meant to report it to kmix as indeed you're correct that it spans more than one subsystem. I think I meant to report it to plasma desktop, I don't know how it ended up on kmix.

As for the correct process, I don't have time to be active on the appropriate KDE lists, so I figured bugs.kde.org was at least a way to document my wish/idea whatever, which I think would help a lot in making Linux/KDE a more productive and user friendly place.

Is there a way to keep this wish open in some meaningful way on bugs.kde.org?

I don't think that bugs.kde.org is a good place. Without an active supporter and promoter it's a dead end there. That's my personal opinion, though.
Actually I have no idea where this can be addressed. It affects "everybody", or nobody, depending on the exact scope. Without at least a draft specification I just cannot tell. In general a question on a mailing list seems more appropriate, like on one of freedesktop.org, kde-core-devel or plasma,
