I have the same problem on openSUSE 11.4 x64 with KDE 4.6.5 I can reproduce exactly what David describes, although I'm trying to set a bluetooth headset as the preferred device. The device is working fine though, as i can get it to work with Pulse Audio Volume Control. regards, Carlos I'm running kubuntu 11.10 with systemsettings 4:4.7.1-0ubuntu5 and phonon 4:4.7.0really4.5.1-1ubuntu3. Pulseaudio is the sound server. My laptop has two soundcards: a discrete and an integrated one. Pulseaudio has decided that the discrete is the default and I wanted to use the integrated one as default but the preferences are only temporarily implemented. What I have noticed is that systemsettings saves the preferences in .pulse as .tdb files but they are not used. A workaround is to write self .pulse/client.conf with the desired preferences.
