Please add a View > Set Encoding menu for directory views to allow people to specify a different character set than the locale.

This is sometimes needed when visiting remote FTP sites using a different encoding than the locale opening CDROMs (and other ROM media) containing an unexpected encoding etc. For local directories it would make sense to try and save the chosen encoding setting (just like the directory's background tile is saved).

An interesting (though not essential) feature would be to make the KIO slaves return the local filename after the encoding transformation so that the correct filename would also be seen in KDE applications opening the file.

I have the same problem too!

I try to hack Konqueror to solve the problem. But I am not success.

Did anyone have a solution of the problem?

Solution is ready and will be added to KDE just after 3.2 is released. It will be available in KDE 3.3.

Note: it will work ONLY for remote filesystems. Local filenames are supposed to have one encoding only for all files. I won't change that.
