I seem to misunderstood the meaning of "back".
if before you went away you were "busy" shouldn't back set the status back to "busy"?

There is no "back" in Kopete at all. You can just set the online status.

so perhaps the name should be changed to "away\online" to avoid confusion.

Bug #263559 explains how to set all online status using dbus, including "away" and "online" status.
