This problem occurs when the VPN connection is dropped, and is completely reproducible with Kubuntu 11.04. This problem started after the distribution upgrade from 10.10. I never saw this issue with 10.10, and always see it with 11.04.

I removed the plasmoid network manager since this completely hangs requiring a restart of KDM. The failure mode is different (a crash) with the KNetworkManager.

The crash can be reproduced every time.
