It is quite common that in chat window you see horizontal line dividing last group of messages you read. Pidgin for example has the ability to do this. Example:
1) I open conference window, type something and switch to other desktop
2) Chat window loses focus. In this time it puts horizontal line after last message
3) I recieve (say) 7 messages, switch back to chat window and immediatelly see what was the message I read last time

It is also good idea to erase previous horizontal lines.

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
