OS/Compiler notes: 

After getting back from a 4 day vacation I fired up KMail and it was downloading 766 messages from my pop3 server (on the same machine). When it reached message 751 the KDE2 crashed but the X server remained running as well as the background picture. I had to ctrl-alt-del to get back out to KDM and re-login again. Once back in I was able to retrieve the rest of the email.

Known problem in that version already fixed in the development version.
