I've been having the same problem lately, would like to add some information about my particular case:
I'm using KUbuntu 11.04 with KDE 4.6.5
(Kopete version 1.0.80, same as reported, just in case someone wondered)
When running from terminal, the following is displayed:
--
Application asked to unregister timer 0x0 which is not registered in this thread. Fix application.
kopete(5607)/kio (KDirWatch) KDirWatchPrivate::removeEntry: doesn't know "~/.kde/share/apps/kabc"
myuser@mycomputer:~$ QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: No existe el fichero o el directorio
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: ~/.config/ibus/bus
kopete(5607)/libkopete Kopete::PluginManager::loadPluginInternal: Unable to find a plugin named ' "" '!
--
A couple of things:
1) "No existe el fichero or directorio" = "No such file or directory".
2) Replaced the absolute paths, username and computer name because I'm a little bit of a privacy freak.

No further output is produced except for "kopete(5607) Kopete::SocketTimeoutWatcher::ackTimeoutCheck: Connection timeout for QHostAddress( "157.55.157.20" ) " after quite a while waiting.

I hope this helped a bit.

MSN has been discontinued by Microsoft, thus I am closing this bug.
