Thank you for the bug report. As this report hasn't seen any changes in 5 years or more, we ask if you can please confirm that the issue still persists. If this bug is no longer persisting or relevant please change the status to resolved. Well... things have changed! Right now (plasma 5.21) I am able to edit files in i.e. Kate and save the changes to a directory that's not "writable" for a regular user (a nice dialog is popping up, which enables the user to fill in their password). That's really cool... But, as far as I know, in Dolphin, there is still NO WAY to copy a file to a directory that is not writable for the current user (personally I still use "sudo cp ..." to do stuff like that. And... that was pretty much what this feature request was about. So I think it makes sense to keep the status unchanged for now. Created attachment 57258 [details] Dialog you get when copying toward a "protected" folder Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.0) OS: Linux If you are trying to copy a file to e.g. /usr/share/, you will always get a message that “copying toward this folder is not allowed due to permissions.” That's all you'll get. Wouldn't it be much easier, that when this happens, you get a message like: "Only root has permission to this folder. Please fill in your password." This would be much easier for everyone, not just for beginners. You also have the same problem when you downloaded an executable file. Many times you have to "chmod" the file at first. (or right click, go to the permissions tab, enable "is executable" etc.) Wouldn't it be much easier instead that when you open the file, you directly get a dialog which asks you “File isn't marked as executable due to security reasons. If you're sure this file can't harm your computer, do you like to make the file executable?” I am sure there are much better dialog texts of course, because I don't speak English in my daily live. I am not really sure to which program I have to assign the wish. There are many programs that have this behavior. Again, sorry for my English, but thank you for reading.
